Structural engineering

We have been discussing structural designs and today we had the challenge of redesigning our index card tower from Friday.  The children's goal was to create pillars that would be strong enough to hold textbooks.  They were given the supplies of:  6 index cards and masking tape.  After the pillars were constructed we tested them by seeing how many textbooks they could hold.  Here's some of the towers....
And the one that held the most (38 books)

Challenge!!

Today we had a difficult challenge, we had to work as a group on our communication skills, by walking on skis in groups of 3.  Each group had a leader that gave directions.  If any member of the team fell off, that member had to turn around backwards.  If 1team member fell off twice then the leader lost their voice and they had to figure out another way to communicate.  The children did a great job and had a blast at the same time!  Here's some pictures.......
